Smart infrastructure monitoring for a reliable natural gas network

To prevent corrosion in the natural gas pipeline network, cathodic protection is used. In this process, an electric current is 'impressed' onto the soil via an external power supply through an anode, causing the environment of the underground gas transport pipeline to function as a cathode, thereby keeping the pipeline protected against corrosion.

For a national network operator, Syrinx developed a wireless monitoring system that allows these protection points - spread across thousands of locations - to be continuously monitored for functionality. In a pilot project, smart monitors were installed that wirelessly communicate with a central processing environment. This makes it possible to remotely and in real-time monitor the functioning of the cathodic protection and detect any deviations early.

The pilot has been successfully completed and has provided valuable insights into the behavior of the protection system throughout all four seasons. Thanks to the collected data, maintenance and adjustments can be carried out much more precisely, contributing to a longer lifespan of the infrastructure and lower management costs.
